✖ Canon Setting:Bayonetta lives in a world separated into three separate realms: Paradiso, the land of light and angels, Inferno, a wicked land of demons, and Purgatorio, a sort of in-between, metaphysical realm that parallels the world of humans.✖ Character History: ❤
500 years prior to the narrative of Bayonetta, a great war between the two factions of Light (the Lumen Sages) and Darknses (the Umbra Witches) reached a fever pitch. Bayonetta, a Umbra Witch herself, was caught in the middle of this, which eventually led to her centuries-long slumber, marking her as one of two remaining Umbra Witches, along with her former friend Jeanne.
The Lumen Sages, as you might have guessed, are attributed the Paradiso, the land of angels. Ages ago, they formed a pact with the overseers of Darkness and Inferno, the Umbra Witches, to ensure the safe passage of time with the usage of the 'Eyes of the World', two essential artifacts. The Lumen Sages possessed the right and the Umbra Witches the left. The Lumen Sages are also capable of forming pacts with angels, whereas the Umbra Witches do the same with demons. They harness their powers and are able to summon them for combat purposes. Umbra Witches possess a myriad of unique abilities, particularly the power of magic. They draw their strength from the moon. All witches seemingly form a pact with a demon who in turn amplifies their powers. Some other powers they are shown to exhibit are 'Witch Time', a strategic slowing down of time for all but the one who activates it, creating portals for transportation purposes, transfiguration into many types of animals, and use magical weapons, such as Bayonetta's signature four pistols. They may also cross between Purgatorio and the human world.
While the Lumen Sages and Umbra Witches were in a state of peace, they did have strict laws that were to be upheld at all times. One of these laws prevented the courtship between the two. An esteemed Lumen Sage, Father Balder, and an Umbra Witch, Rosa, did not abide by these laws, and had a child together, which broke the sacred laws. This ended the peace between the two, resulting in many wars between the two factions, in which the Umbra Witches rose victorious. Balder, after being exiled by his faction, used his people as martyrs to exhibit the cruelty and evil of the witches, and began to stage witch hunts, which eventually wiped nearly all the Umbra Witches out.
500 years later, Bayonetta awakes from her long slumber, her memory wiped clean, to find herself in modern times. She believes to possess one of the Eyes of the World, and seeks to find the other, leading her to the city of Vigrid, where it is believed the other lies. Most of the story takes place in the holy city of Vigrid, which is said to be closer to Paradiso than most places on Earth.
Later, it is discovered that the Eyes of the World are not physical treasures but rather two people that best exemplify Light and Darkness respectively. The Eyes of the World are used to resurrect Jubileus, a creation goddess and divine being. Balder had always intended to revive Jubileus, and used himself and Bayonetta as the respective eyes.
✖ Character Personality:Bayonetta is a unique woman to say the least, partially so because she's the seeming last of a dead clan of magic wielders known as the Umbra Witches. Boisterous, suggestive, and provocative in more was than one, Bayonetta is a campy individual whose unafraid to say exactly what she's thinking at any given time. She, in many ways, exemplifies colloquial and thematic elements of Darkness, perfect for her role as the surviving member of a clan who reigned over Darkness itself.✖ Character Powers: List your character's powers and skill sets in this section.
While feminine mystique is certainly one of her most prominent traits, she is not lacking in the toughness department. Able to take out a legion of angels in just a few waves of her guns, or hair, she is not one to be trifled with; her natural swagger certainly is a testament for her physical and magical capabilities.
Bayonetta has an ineffectual, unflappable air around her, the type who doesn't bat an eyelash at explosions behind her. She doesn't often show her own emotional distress, isntead wiping it off with sarcasm and witty euphemisms. Likewise, she is often caught up in her own affairs and chooses to ignore those of others unless they become relevant to her — she states that 'Heaven and Hell can tear each other apart', as, to her, the ongoing war has nothing to do with her.
Due to her aura of calmness, she takes great joy in toying with her prey. In the game, you get bonuses for 'torturing' enemies, which entails dragging out their eventual demise. This teasing nature also crosses over to her interactions with other people; she's always snarky and has a myriad of quips that she dishes out on the spot, and affectionately likes to play around with those she likes — when she first meets Luka, she trips him, a sign of their playful (at least on Bayonetta's end) cat-and-mouse relationship.
The only time this impenetrable will wavers is when the topic of Bayonetta's past arises. Her mission — for 20 whole years — has been to recover said memory. While she doesn't like to vocalize it, whenever her memory is called into question, Bayonetta noticeably clams up, becomes silent, and he expression dampens.
While Bayonetta may be a patroness of Darkness, she isn't all double double toil and trouble. She may not show it often, but she has quite the heart, and a maternal instinct lies within her; we can see this especially in her interactions with Cereza, who she practically adopts. While motherhood doesn't come as naturally to her as many others, and she makes some questionable decisions with Cereza, such as lifting her by her neck and brandishing a gun at her, she manages to be there for her, protect her, and comfort her when need be. She even goes out of her way to save Cereza's stuffed cat — Cheshire — from an angel.
Of course, it takes a while for this maternal side to truly surface. For a while, it's just a facade, a way to get Cereza to cooperate; Bayonetta is, originally, a selfish person, one who only ever has her own goals in mind. Cereza is, as she hears pulsate through her own head multiple times throughout the game, 'the key to her future', so of course she'd throw on a kindly voice. Bayonetta is persuasive, a great actress, and can be personable when she needs to be. Still, the task of guardianship weighs heavier than fighting God's army on her; her annoyance with Cereza shines through multiple times, and she claims the two things she can't stand more than anything are cockroaches and crying babies.
She, naturally, doesn't like to show this side. When Jeanne teases her about her attachment to Cererza, she replies with aggressiveness, and later facetiousness; Jeanne notes that she has quite the tongue when 'curling round the truth'. Despite her attempts to mask her affection for Cereza, she still openly worries about her. The only time we really see Bayonetta in a state of panic occurs right after defeating Jeanne, when she's frantically looking for Cereza on a sinking plane. She doesn't even pause to leave Jeanne with a signature one-liner.
Late in the game, we learn that Cereza is actually a younger Bayonetta, which gives us a hint to how she was in her early years, and how her upbringing affected her. Naive, innocent, and trusting, Bayonetta was embittered by the political turmoil between the Lumen Sages and Umbra Witches. However, Bayonetta took this ostracization from both clans as an opportunity to become stronger, into the tough as nails witch she is.
From Cereza, we also see how formative Bayonetta's olderself was to Bayonetta's personality. Cereza emulated who 'Bayonetta' is. In some scenes, we even seeher mimicking Bayonetta's movements. Cereza later strives to become 'Bayonetta', taking on the moniker. In short, Bayonetta is partially responsible for her own fortitude; showing her own strength and courage to her younger self instilled in Cereza a sense of resilience and perseverance that few orphaned children can claim to have.
